Local SVOD players picking up the pace with scripted acquisitions as Netflix and Amazon slow
Netflix (and to a lesser extent Amazon) are taking a smaller share of new scripted TV dramas from the most recent 2018/19 season. While Netflix further increase their ‘Originals’ content spend, competing SVOD players in each local market are buying more shows for their services. Free and Pay TV channels are acquiring shows at a similar rate as before.
Besides Netflix and Amazon, HBO are the most active SVOD player in Show Tracker markets, with around 50 acquisitions in Sweden and Spain in the last two annual seasons.
Elsewhere the numbers are growing as services expand into new territories, acquire more content to differentiate from competitors or launch an Original Productions focus of their own. Starzplay is a prime example of each, with Lionsgate looking to further increase their global footprint while making the service the exclusive home to all of its new content.
