On this special edition of Inside Content, I am joined by Stewart Clarke, SVP, Content, International at Deadline to unpack the findings from 3Vision’s 2025 TV Industry Trends & Predictions Report. This episode offers a candid and insightful look at the forces shaping the global content industry.

Together, Stewart and I explore how studios are reassessing content monetisation strategies, the return of windowing, and the shifting role of broadcasters and streamers alike. Reflecting on a challenging 2024—shaped by economic uncertainty, global elections, and the continued rise of AI—the conversation looks at how the industry is responding with pragmatism, caution, and creativity.

Key themes include:

●         The Return of Windowing
Studios are re-embracing second windows and seeking new monetisation paths for existing IP. Paramount’s vocal stance on licensing, Disney’s recent moves, and the resurgence of LA Screenings signal a shift back to traditional distribution playbooks.

●         Changing Dynamics Between Broadcasters and Streamers
Legacy broadcasters are regaining relevance as co-production partners and reliable commissioners—particularly as US money becomes scarcer. Their vast reach and consistent output make them critical players in the new ecosystem.

●         Bundling and Branded Hubs
The trend towards re-bundling continues as SVOD services partner with pay-TV platforms. Paramount+ and Max are now appearing as branded destinations or "hubs," integrated into wider content ecosystems rather than launching standalone DTC apps.

●         Shifting Production Economics
As budgets tighten and commissioning risk declines, producers are being pushed to create more for less. The survey reveals an industry-wide acknowledgment that new funding models and partnerships are crucial to sustaining output.

●         Aggregation 2.0
The modern equivalent of channel aggregation is now service aggregation. Operators like Sky and Virgin Media are curating SVOD platforms just as they once curated channels—responding to consumer demand and evolving ARPU pressures.

●         Consolidation on the Horizon
While large-scale US mergers may be unlikely in the near term, the distribution and content rights space is heating up. Companies like Fremantle, Banijay, ITVStudios, and All3Media are seen as potential players in the next wave of M&A.

●         The Continued Value of Theatrical and PVOD
Theatrical windows are being revalued, while premium VOD remains a significant (if opaque) revenue stream. Studios are carefully adjusting release windows to maximise returns without under cutting their first-run offerings.

This wide-ranging conversation offers a grounded look at where the content industry stands—and where it may be heading—as it adapts to new realities. Don’t miss this reflective and data-driven discussion.
